Netflix Hits Theaters

Predominantly a streaming platform, Netflix hits theaters this Thanksgiving, premiering their film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, a standalone sequel to their murder mystery Knives Out.

Announced October 6, 2022,  Netflix has partnered with AMC, Regal, and Cinemark theaters, three significant American theater chains, to bring a limited release of around 600 cinemas US based, with additional theaters worldwide announced soon, of their film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, airing from November 23 to November 29, before hitting the platform worldwide on December 23, 2022.

Its predecessor, Knives Out, a box office exclusive, was a sleeper hit after its initial release, meaning it gained attention after its first release week. Grossing over $311 million worldwide and costing around $40 million to make, Knives Out proved theatrical release could do well without a franchise baking. Netflix took notice of the film's impact and provided writer and director Rian Johnson $465 million to move his future iterations to their platform.

In the past, Netflix was always considered a competitor for theatrical releases, with the majority of chains refusing to work with them due to their inability to agree on contracts. However, over the pandemic, as more people began staying inside and film production halted, many theaters suffered significant losses. Cinemark theaters, on the other hand, adapted to their audience's needs and agreed to sign with Netflix, releasing Red Notice, a comedy action film starring Dwayne Johnson opposite Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gado, in 750 theaters nationwide, a week before reaching the platform.

When asked about Netflix's decision to release Glass Onion in theaters, Johnson was ecstatic, stating "these movies are made to thrill audiences, and I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd as they experience Glass Onion.”
