Twitch Gambling Crack Down

Beginning October 18, 2022, Twitch will ban the streaming of content employing gambling websites, with exceptions, such as poker, according to Variety.

Released on Twitter, Twitch comments"Gambling content on Twitch has been a big topic of discussion in the community, and something we’ve been actively reviewing. Today, we want to update you on our plans. We’ll be making a policy update on 10/18 to prohibit streaming of gambling sites that include slots, roulette, or dice games that aren't licensed either in the U.S. or other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection. We will continue to allow websites that focus on sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker."

Continuously being a subject of conflict, Twitch truly came under fire when fellow streamer Abraham Mohammed, publicly known as Sliker, revealed he'd been scamming friends and followers out of thousands of dollars. Requesting money from those surrounding him, Slicker lied about financial hardships, promising to repay people when given the opportunity, all while gambling his money away, estimating around three hundred thousand dollars in losses.

Growing in popularity since its introduction, becoming one of the top ten watched categories on Twitch, slots quickly became a point of discussion with many streamers. Outwardly, catering to the younger demographic, many larger streamers, including, Imane, referred to as Pokimane, and Hasan Piker, known as Hansanabi, voiced their concerns about the platform's acceptance of gambling, especially, when it promoted accessible digital gambling websites to primarily minor audiences.

Despite constant criticism and streamers threatening to strike in order to get gambling banned, the controversy surrounding Sliker convinced Twitch to take action. Posting an update revolving around policy changes to their Twitter, Twitch highlights changes towards streamable gambling content, however, Twitch doesn't fully ban gambling from its platform but places loose restrictions on them. Banning slots, roulette, or dice games, and the sites Stake, Rollbit, Duelbits, and Roobet, Twitch provides creators with the options of alternative gambling, as long as it meets requirements.
